Dr. Marti Monroe

Written by Administrator
Marti Monroe, Ph.D., began to teach parent education when her children were very small and she began to hear sounds coming from her like those that came from her own mother. The tone and the words were frighteningly similar to those used by her mother when she was angry. Knowing she wanted her children to have a different experience she knew she had to do something very different. Being a trained teacher and school counselor didn’t seem to make the difference she had hoped. She needed to be educated in parenting. In 1971 when she looked for a parent education group to join, the closest one was 2.5 hours away. Marti was already scheduled to teach a parenting class for the American Association of University Women and so made that her first class for parent education – not because she was an expert, but because she needed help and education herself.

Mother of 3, stepmother of 2, and grandmother of 14, Marti now says that she’ll retire as soon as every parent and every child lives in a respectful and healthy environment. She believes Positive Discipline and Nonviolent Communication are the best means of arriving at that goal with everyone being a winner.

Marti has taught thousands of parents and teachers how to apply Adlerian Principles in the home and classroom. Her greatest testimony to her effectiveness is that her son, Mike Malterre, and daughter-in-love, Jody Elliot Malterre, teach classes with her and successfully live next door to Marti and her husband Dane Steck. Together they share the joy of celebrating the growth and development of Emily and Elise.

Every year Marti teaches many Positive Discipline classes in her local area and all over the world. She customizes classes, speeches and workshops to meet the demands of interested parents and teachers.

She also coaches families in their homes as Granny 9-1-1. Her visits adapt to the needs of the situation, with the intention of increasing cooperation, respect, and fun in the family.
She does the same thing in classrooms.
